PC Kelly Edgar from Cottingham Police Station said: “CCTV stills have been released of two women believed to be of Eastern European origin who we would like the public to help identify and ultimately help us with our investigations.
“It appears each offence follows a similar pattern, the majority of all the victim’s have left their purse visibly on show or momentarily left their bag unattended. On each occasion the victim did not see or feel a person enter their bag and take their purses.
“Whoever is committing these offences are clearly very good at stealing a purse within a few moments, not arousing suspicion.
“Following this spate of purse dipping thefts, I have spoken to many of the local retails and they are all very supportive of informing their customers of the potential issue and being more vigilant of the people who shop in their store.
“Morrison’s Supermarket in particular have been very supportive and have agreed to regularly announce over the tannoy system of the potential risk of leaving your handbags or valuables unattended or on display whilst shopping.”
Anyone who recognises the people shown in the CCTV stills or believe they may have information which could help detectives investigating the crimes are asked to contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting any of the above crime numbers.
SHOPPERS SHOULD ADOPT THE FOLLOWING CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE HOW TO PREVENT BECOMING A VICTIM OF PURSE DIPPING;-
• Think about putting your purse in a front pocket rather than in an open bag. Men should also keep their wallet in a front pocket rather than in their back pocket.
• Use a handbag that can be closed properly so that it is more difficult for someone to reach in.
• Keep your handbag in front of you so you can see it at all times. If you use a handbag with a strap, wear it across your body and not just over you.
• If you keep your purse in a shopping bag, put your purse at the bottom and not at the top and use a shopping bag that can be closed.
• Avoid carrying around large amounts of cash.
Keep your cash card separate from your cheque book and pin number.
• Be aware of the people immediately around you.
• Report incidents straight away.
