Eight students, aged between 15 and 18 years old, are spending five days with Police Officers and Staff in Hull, so that they can investigate a crime from the initial report, through to the final stages when a ‘suspect’ is interviewed and charged.

Police Sergeant Ian Goode, from the Public Order and Licensing Department, has organised a fictitious scenario, so that pupils have the opportunity to see and take part in a crime investigation in its entirety and spend the week role playing as Police Officers. He said: “A packed timetable has been prepared which combines both classroom and outside work, so that there is a real mix of police work for the students to get stuck in with.

“Hopefully, the students will gain a great understanding of how much time, effort and dedication goes into investigating an offence which is reported to Humberside Police.”

The participants will also be shown how to investigate a crime and experience first hand what systems and processes Humberside Police use to detect real life crime.

The aim of the 5 day scheme is to help young people develop work related skills desired by organisations such as police forces, as well as gather evidence to support curriculum activities, whilst gaining experience in the workplace.

The itinerary includes:

  • Officer safety training and vehicle checks
  • Attending a house which has been burgled
  • House-to-house enquiries
  • Viewing city wide CCTV
  • Visiting the air support unit
  • Taking witness statements
  • Traffic patrol and vehicle stop
  • Arresting suspects and carrying out property searches
  • Custody procedures
  • Interviewing suspects
  • Charging suspect

Inspector Karen de Braal, from the Public Order and Licensing Department, is looking forward to welcoming the pupils to Humberside Police, she said: “It will be a challenging but rewarding week, not only for the students, but for the staff involved.

“We are aiming to develop the skills and attitudes which young people need for potential future employment with Humberside Police and the work place in general.

“This work experience scheme will give people an overarching view of what can be expected with a career in a police service and also provide an idea of what it’s like to work full time and to tight deadlines.”
