The man was then seen making off on his bike onto Arlington Avenue onto Hallgate, down Station Road and onto Northgate in Cottingham.

The very upset lady in her 80’s made the 999 call within 10 minutes of her bag snatch and the police immediately went out looking for the offender.

By chance, a Police colleague in Hessle overheard the description of the offender over the police radio system and recalled stopping a man on a similar bike in the Hessle area, earlier that morning. The quick thinking officer had taken the mans details down in his police note book and knew where he lived.

Within 30 minutes of the bag snatch being reported to us, police officers were locking up a man from Hull for theft.

Not surprisingly the man who was arrested for the theft is disputing his involvement, so the police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a man described as white, in his mid 20’s, 6ft tall, of a skinny build, and having a large nose in the Cottingham area last Tuesday morning (between 10am – 12.30).

The offender is also described as wearing a grey hooded top and dark silky coloured body warmer, navy blue tracksuit bottoms and light coloured trainers. He was also riding a blue mountain bike with a white plastic bag over the seat.

Did you see this man?

The elderly lady was very shaken by this incident, but was determined to get out and about the following day, which we are glad to hear.

If you witnessed a man on a mountain bike carrying a handbag across lunchtime (12noon) in the Cottingham area or think you know where the contents of the bag are, please call Humberside Police on 101, quoting crime reference number CM/2030372/2014.
